A Win For Upper Winchendon
A great-grandfather who's due to have a lung removed as part of cancer treatment has won £30,000 today with People's Postcode Lottery.
Francis described the win as the 'best pain relief' ahead of his operation for lung cancer. He scooped the bumper prize after his Buckinghamshire postcode, HP18 0EJ, was announced as our Saturday Street Prize winner.
Francis said, "We've never seen this sort of money before. It's by far the best pain relief. I can't believe it! I can't get my head around it."
Francis is due to have major surgery to remove his left lung in coming weeks. He said, "I went into hospital 12 months ago and they removed the bottom half of my left lung, but the cancer has come back, so I've got to go in again and have the whole lung removed."
Francis' partner Patricia said the win would relieve some stress. Patricia said, "It'll help a tremendous amount. It takes away some of the worries for different things like doing the garden - so we can pay somebody now."
A Trip To Graceland
Francis and Patricia are Elvis Presley fans and hope to return to Tennessee to visit Graceland - the home of the late rock'n'roll star. Francis said, "We're big Elvis fans and we've been to Graceland once before, but we've always said we'd love to go back, and £30,000 means we could do it."
Before flying out to the States, the couple are going to use the cash to help make life a little easier. Patricia, who is currently on the waiting list for a double hip replacement, plans to buy a mobility scooter. Patricia said, "I think I'll get a mobility scooter and tear up and down the road like I do around Tesco!"
A Change Of Luck
The couple said they've never had the best of luck before bagging the five-figure win. Patricia said, "We've never had anything like this sort of money before. The most I've won is £77 on a scratchcard." Francis added, "It always seems to happen to somebody else. It doesn't feel real that it's happened to us."
They plan to toast their win with a few glasses of champagne but not before they share their good news. Patricia said, "We can celebrate with a bottle of champers, not cheap old wine. But before we do, we'll tell our family what's just happened - they'll be shocked as we are."
Stuck For Words
Francis' neighbour Donna also pocketed £30,000 thanks to their postcode. Donna couldn't believe her eyes after her prize cheque was revealed by People's Postcode Lottery Presenter Danyl Johnson.
Donna said, "It's unbelievable. I'm still speechless which doesn't happen often - trust me!"
Donna, who works as a security manager, said the win had come at a great time. She explained, "Bizarrely, the engine management light came on in my car yesterday. So, I can get a new car now."
Donna and her husband Terry are celebrating their 18th wedding anniversary next month and are now planning a romantic break in Cornwall. Donna said, "I think a holiday is in order - we're suckers for Cornwall, so we'll be going there. It's a beautiful drive, and we won't need to worry about the car breaking down now."
Postcode Lottery Presenter Danyl Johnson said, "A massive congratulations to Francis and Donna on winning Saturday's £30,000 prize. I hope they have the best time celebrating and spending their win."
