Street Prize
Bonanza For Barrow-upon-Humber
Nine neighbours in Barrow-upon-Humber are having a jolly January after their postcode, DN19 7AU, was announced as today's Street Prize winner.
Eight of the residents picked up an incredible £30,000 each, while the ninth winner walked away with a staggering £60,000 thanks to playing with two tickets.
When retired Foreman Ian saw the red jackets going past his window he thought it was just the postwoman delivering his mail. He got the surprise of his life when he was handed a cheque for £30,000. Ian said, "When you think of all the streets and avenues and postcodes that could've been picked, it just makes you feel really special to think that it was ours that came up. I never expected anything like this and I'm just over the moon!"
Ian has 4 children, 11 grandchildren, and another 4 great-grandchildren. He joked, "I can just about afford next Christmas now! This is a great deal of money to me and really means a lot. My wife Rosemary and I have a caravan in Whitby that we spend a lot of time at with our two Labradors Cass and Jude, so it would be nice to upgrade that and get a bigger one. I'm elated and getting this visit has already been the highlight of my year!"
Clare, who works for the NHS, was with her husband Brian when the People's Postcode Lottery team came knocking on her door. She said, "I never dreamt I'd win this much and the first thing I'm going to do is book a family holiday for myself, Brian and our two sons – I quite like the sound of Mexico! I'll also be able to get everything done to the house that I've been putting off because of money. It'll be nice to go shopping and treat myself to whatever takes my fancy too!"
John, a retired Engineer, was taken aback when he was presented with his cheque for £30,000. "It's only just sinking in as it was a huge shock. I know most of the other winners so I'm sure we will all end up at the local pub tonight – drinks will definitely be on us!"
John and his wife Helen have relatives overseas who they are planning to visit thanks to the win. "We have family in the USA and Australia who we haven't seen for years. Being pensioners, we don't have lots of spare money, but now we can afford to take a big trip to visit them which will be wonderful."
Teaching Assistant Nichola was ecstatic when she receive her cheque. She said, "It's absolutely wonderful! I'm hoping to take my family away on holiday to France, but I haven't thought about it too much – I'm still in shock!"
Whilst Nichola wants to take her family away, she's also planning to treat herself. "I'm going to buy myself a Louis Vuitton handbag because I can finally get one without feeling guilty!", she added.
Carol was with her husband Martin when she discovered how much she'd won. She commented, "I'm astonished. Martin and I have never won anything like this before - it just feels wonderful!"
People's Postcode Lottery Presenters Jeff Brazier and Judie McCourt were in Barrow-upon-Humber to hand deliver golden envelopes to the lucky winners. Judie said, "Neighbours winning alongside each other is what People's Postcode Lottery is all about, so it's incredible to see nine lucky players winning big and sharing the joy of celebrating together in Barrow-upon-Humber. If you'd like to us to knock on your door or ring your bell in 2019 then make sure you're playing with your postcode."
32% of the ticket price goes to charities, and so far, players of People's Postcode Lottery have raised £382 Million for good causes. This prize was part of a draw promoted by Breast Cancer Care.
A number of charities near today's winners have received funding from players, including Think2Speak. The group was awarded £2,000 last year to deliver a number of free one-to-one counselling sessions to young carers.
