Volunteering For Homeless Charities In Walsall
Research from major homeless charity Shelter previously showed that Walsall had the fourth highest rate of homelessness in the West Midlands. Almost 500 people were sleeping rough or in temporary accommodation.
Homelessness may be a complex issue, but there's nothing complicated about how awful it is to spend the night out on the streets - especially when the winter cold bites. Whether you want to get involved with outreach services to help rough sleepers or provide advice and support to people looking for a permanent roof over their heads, there are plenty of Walsall charities that need your help.
One of the best ways you can provide it is by volunteering. Donating your time to a good cause is invariably a hugely rewarding thing to do, and can often open up new avenues in the future. Whether you're looking to learn some new skills or fill up your time either away from work or when you retire, you can read more about some of the fantastic homeless charities Walsall plays host to below.
HOMELESS CHARITIES IN WALSALL THAT NEED YOUR SUPPORT
Spring Housing Association
Spring Housing Association was set up in 2014, but already leases almost 400 houses and flats from private landlords to more than 500 people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
In addition to helping to provide people with high quality housing, this charity also offers holistic services aimed at delivering support for individuals as they seek employment, training and advice. This opens up more possibilities to volunteer with Spring Housing Association within a placement in the admin, finance, housing management or repairs and maintenance team.
SIFA Fireside
A combination of two charities that both started life in the 1970s and came together in 2007, SIFA Fireside aims to reduce homelessness and offending, improve health and increase social inclusion, life skills and employment potential.
Based in Birmingham less than 10 miles away from Walsall, the charity does this through a range of services offered at its drop-in centre, giving you the the perfect place to help out as a volunteer.
Crisis
With more than 50 years of experience fighting homelessness in the UK, Crisis offers a wide range of services to help people who are homeless or facing the prospect of losing their home. As well as this, it carries out research and campaigns for change, putting together a plan for how we can end homelessness altogether.
You could volunteer with Crisis at Skylight Birmingham where people can get emergency help and ongoing support through training and educational courses. You could also get involved with the local Crisis at Christmas service.
YMCA Black Country Group
With the YMCA movement tracing its origins all the way back to 1844, the YMCA Black Country Group's roots can be found in the 19th century too, when it started life as West Bromwich & District YMCA. That branch merged with Wolverhampton YMCA in 2011, and together they continue to support people with things such as housing, employment, childcare and beating addiction.
The charity has a number of locations in and around Walsall, including the Glebe Centre where people can get help with everything from homelessness and mental health issues to problems with drugs, alcohol and unemployment. This gives you a great opportunity to get involved and volunteer. You may prefer to help run a session or activity somewhere, or even get involved at the office in West Bromwich a few miles away.
