Surprises In Stanmore
Champagne corks were popping in Stanmore today. Four neighbours celebrated scooping incredible £30,000 cheques after their lucky postcode, HA7 1PQ, was announced as a winner of our Saturday Street Prize. One player netted £60,000 thanks to playing with two tickets.
Today's The Day
Tak-Kwong was left stunned into silence when Street Prize Presenter Danyl Johnson revealed his £60,000 cheque. After seeing his prize, Tak said, "You see the adverts on TV. You just hear it - you want to believe it. You wait for the day and today's the day!
"I didn't believe it and I still don't believe it."
Tak is planning a trip to Hong Kong and wants to spoil his family with his winnings. He said, "I've got family in Hong Kong and my wife has family in China but obviously due to the pandemic we've not been able to get back but now we can look at having a little trip."
"I'm all about my family - as long as they're happy, I'm happy. I'm not materialistic so nothing really for me, just for them."
Tak, who works as a police dispatcher, has set his sights on treating his wife and two sons. He added, "I know my wife wants something from Tiffany's. My son needs a new laptop and I think my other son wants a gaming chair."
The dad-of-two has lived on the street for over 20 years and signed up to play our lottery online. He explained, "I bought one ticket and I thought there was an error with it, so I bought another ticket. Rather than cancel one I let it play as it's only twenty quid a month." Tak laughed and added, "It was a good mistake now."
With four winners on his street, he was delighted with the news. He said, "It's nice to win on your own but it's nicer to win with your neighbours. It's very special, I love this community and I love my neighbours here, we're very close."
A Great Feeling
Another lucky winner was Karen, who scooped a £30,000 prize. She said, "It means a lot actually, it's really good after Christmas and after the last two years we've had."
The mum-of-two thought her win had come at just the right time. Karen said, "I was made redundant twice during the pandemic and it's just a great feeling to know we'll be able to spoil ourselves as it's been tough."
Karen plans to treat her granddaughter to a Disney holiday as well as a sunny getaway for herself. She added, "The first thing I'm going to do is book a trip to Euro Disney for my six-year-old granddaughter.
"Then I'm going to book a holiday for myself, somewhere hot and sunny because I haven't been anywhere in four years, and I desperately need a tan."
Taken Aback
Karen's next-door neighbour Tudor also picked up £30,000 thanks to his postcode. He couldn't quite believe his luck when he saw how much he'd won. Tudor said, "That is crazy. I'm quite taken aback actually."
Tudor intends to spend some of his windfall on a trip to visit his sister-in-law. He said, "I'll probably go back to the Caribbean later this year to visit some friends and family. My wife passed away from cancer ten years ago and I haven't visited her sister in a long time. I'll hopefully fly first class now."
Being an avid rugby supporter he also plans a few trips away to watch his national team. He said, "There are a number of rugby trips on the horizon and let's hope everything gets back to some normality this year and I can go back out there and support my beloved Wales."
Danyl Johnson presented today's winners with their prizes and shared his congratulations. He said, "I'm so pleased for our winners in Stanmore, what an amazing surprise! It was great to meet Tak, Karen and Tudor and hear about how they'll be spending their winnings! I'm sure they'll enjoy spoiling themselves and their loved ones this year."
